Rival bosses overseas for Super clash

NEWTONGRANGE Star entertain Bo'ness United in the biggest game of the season so far in the East Region Super League – but neither of the two managers will be there to see it.

Star boss Graeme Armstrong is in Australia on a long-standing running commitment, while his Bo'ness counterpart, Alan McGonigal, is off to Dubai on a trip to celebrate his Silver Wedding.

That means Alan Prentice, Armstrong's assistant, and Willie Newbigging, McGonigal's No.2, will be the men in charge as second-placed Newtongrange take on the league leaders in a crunch clash.

Bo'ness go into the match with a four-point lead and also have two games in hand on their opponents, a scenario McGonigal reckons means the pressure is firmly on Newtongrange.

"They have to win tomorrow if they have aspirations of hauling us back," said McGonigal before heading off on his trip to the Middle East.

"After two recent defeats, I was delighted that we were able to get back to winning ways against Musselburgh last weekend and the fact Newtongrange lost (to Bonnyrigg] was a bit of cream for us.

"While we won 4-0 against Newtongrange on the opening day of the league season, the scoreline flattered us in that game but we're looking forward to this one."

So are Newtongrange and Prentice is looking to his players to bounce straight back from that sore defeat at Bonnyrigg.

"A win last weekend would have given us the chance to go top this weekend but, having missed out on that chance, it is important that we get back on track with a victory. Then it would be game on again.

"When we played Bo'ness earlier in the season it was very close for the first hour before we capitulated a bit in the last half-hour and we know that nothing less than our best will do."

Grant McNicholl is an injury doubt for the home side, while Darren Gribben could miss out for Bo'ness due to shin splints.
