Rhodes nets two to down dad's old side

THE son of a former East End Park favourite shone in the rain as Huddersfield defeated Dunfermline 2-1 with the Terriers' striker Jordan Rhodes showing he is as good a striker as his dad, Andy, was a goalkeeper.

Pars fans saw new signings, goalkeeper Paul Gallacher, Jason Thomson and Paul Burns start and they were also able to welcome back a member of last season's First Division title-winning squad as the Yorkshire side gave Callum Woods a debut.

Jim McIntyre's men have just returned from a training camp in Austria and they showed that they have been working on their passing moves as they took the lead when Gary Mason, Martin Hardie and Burns combined to find Steven McDougall, who finished with a low shot in 20 minutes.

Scotland Under-21 striker Rhodes capitalised on hesitancy in the home defence to drill home from 20 yards six minutes before the break and he struck again three minutes later when he drove low past Gallacher.

Trialist striker Craig Sutherland scored the opening goal for Dumbarton on the way to a 4-1 win over Partick Thistle. Thistle equalised on the hour mark when Kieran Burns netted from the penalty spot, before Scott Agnew fired home a curling free-kick on 68 minutes. Pat Walker and Kieran Brannan both struck in the last 10 minutes to seal the win.

Andy Jackson scored the game's only goal as Morton defeated Queen's Park 1-0 at Hampden. The former St Johnstone striker was handily placed to turn the ball home from four yards out after a free kick from the right was headed into his path.

In other games Brechin defeated Pollok 6-0, Newtongrange Star triumphed 1-0 over East Stirling and Jason Crooks scored twice as Elgin saw off Forres 4-3. A Hearts XI lost 2-1 at East of Scotland League side Vale of Leithen, while Buckie and Inverness drew 3-3.
