Records tumble at Lossiemouth

THE second day of the Scottish Universities’ Championships produced record low scoring in the event’s 80-year history as a tenth of the field posted scores in the 60s at Moray Golf Club in Lossiemouth. As competitors made the most of the unseasonable conditions, Stirling’s Duncan Douglas led the way with a 65 over the New Course.

That took him into fifth position on 139, four shots behind fellow Stirling student Darren Timms after he signed for a 66 to set a 36-hole championship record.

Timms holds a three-shot advantage over another Stirling player, David Booth, as well as Aberdeen’s Nick McAndrew and Matt Wheeler of St Andrews heading into the final 36 holes today.

The ladies’ championship also concludes with two rounds today and it is going to take something special to stop Stirling’s Eilidh Briggs. The Scottish international added a 68 to an opening 73 to open up a seven-shot lead over team-mate Hannah McCook (73).
