Record-breaking run puts Nick Smith in frame

SCOTLAND'S Nick Smith gave the Great Britain and Northern Ireland's selectors for the indoor World Championships something to think about at the Aviva Grand Prix in Birmingham on Saturday as he set a new national record of 6.60 seconds in the 60 metres.

Smith finished third behind Michael Rodgers and Daniel Bailey but ahead of Mark Lewis-Francis in fourth and Harry Aikines-Aryeetey in fifth.

The Great Britain and Northern Ireland team for Doha will be announced tomorrow following today's selection meeting.

However, Aikines-Aryeetey remains favourite to join Dwain Chambers in the team after finishing second in the trials at Sheffield in 6.55secs. Athletes who won their events at the trials and had the qualifying standard are guaranteed one of the two places available in each event.

Elsewhere, Jenny Meadows has vowed to protect her fitness to ensure she remains on course for another world title.

Meadows won bronze in the 800m at the World Championships in Berlin last August and looks a good bet to at least equal that achievement in Doha next month.

The diminutive Wigan athlete broke Kelly Holmes' seven-year-old British record with a time of one minute 59.11secs, taking 0.10secs off the mark set by double Olympic champion Holmes in Belgium in 2003.

And, although the 28-year-old still struggles to believe she is as good as her results suggest, there is little doubt she will travel to Doha as one of the favourites for a medal.

"It's amazing," said Meadows. "I knew I was in really good shape from last week but then you look at the record you think I've got no right to try to target that.

"There are still three weeks till Doha, I'm sure people have more training to do but so have I."

Most of the selectors' decisions appear straightforward, with the likes of world champions Jessica Ennis and Phillips Idowu certain of their places in the team despite missing the trials, although Ennis is struggling with a foot injury.
