Record-breaking cyclist Graeme Obree retires
GRAEME Obree, the Scottish cyclist who twice broke the world record for greatest distance covered in one hour, has announced his retirement from the sport.
The double world champion in the individual pursuit set a new world record just two weeks ago, riding his experimental Beastie bike at over 56 miles per hour in Battle Mountain, Nevada.
Obree was infamous for his meticulous preparation and for building his own bikes from a wide range of professional and household objects. His story was the subject of the 2005 film The Flying Scotsman starring Trainspotting’s Johnny Lee Miller.
Obree announced his retirement on BBC Radio Scotland’s Sportsnation programme.
