Raymond Domenech receives €1m pay-off

FORMER France coach Raymond Domenech will receive €975,000 after agreeing compensation with the French football federation, president Noel Le Graet said last night.

Domenech was sacked after the French team's shambolic group - stage exit at last year's World Cup where striker Nicolas Anelka was sent home for offending the coach and the players went on strike. "The Domenech issue is closed," the recently elected Le Graet said on the federation website.

Le Graet, who personally met Domenech last month when he was asking for e2.9 million at a tribunal, said the former coach would receive e575,000 in severance pay after 17 years at the federation and e400,000 in damages for his dismissal for serious misconduct. Meanwhile, France coach Laurent Blanc recalled Lille winger Dimitri Payet to his squad for next week's friendly match against Chile. Payet did not play in the June friendlies in Ukraine and Poland, and his last appearance for France was in November's friendly at England.

Blanc overlooked Bayern Munich winger Franck Ribery and Arsenal midfielder Abou Diaby, who are both recovering from ankle injuries. Aston Villa winger Charles N'Zogbia, who scored against Poland, was not selected this time.

Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema's improved form has also being noticed by France coach Laurent Blanc.

"He's a (player] who's understood that he didn't do everything he should have last year to be in the best condition. He hasn't made the same mistakes this year," said Blanc, who criticised Benzema's excess weight - of two to three kilograms - last September and said he had to improve his finishing.

"This year he hasn't made that mistake," Blanc said. "He must have told himself that it was very hard and taking a long time (to settle at Real Madrid] and that maybe it worked against him in his club. Everyone makes mistakes, the important thing is not to keep making them, especially when you have a weight problem."
