Rangers team '˜needs more British players' says Charlie Adam

Adam made the comment on social media after watching his former club lose 2-0 to Motherwell in the Betfred Cup semi final on Sunday.

The Stoke City midfielder tweeted: “More British players needed at Rangers ASAP.”

There were ten British-born players in the Rangers matchday squad - Jak Alnwick, James Tavernier, Declan John, Ryan Jack, Graham Dorrans, Josh Windass, Wes Foderingham, Lee Hodson, Ross McCrorie and Jason Holt.

Six started, while the remainder of the starting XI were foreign players - Bruno Alves, Fabio Cardoso, Daniel Candeias, Carlos Pena and Alfredo Morelos.

Adam’s comments attracted many responses, and the ex-Scotland international attempted to clarify his comments, adding: “I think Rangers need people who know what it means to play for the club. Better quality players.”

When it was pointed out that many Rangers greats were foreign, Adam responded: “Yeah, but they were good foreign players, I am not sure these are good enough.”

Pedro Caixinha brought in a number of overseas players following his arrival including Alves, Cardoso, Candeias, Pena and Morelos, as well as Dalcio, Eduardo Herrera and Aaron Nemane.
