Rangers to host Chelsea in summer friendly match

Rangers will take on Chelsea in a glamour friendly at Ibrox on Saturday, 6 August, the Ibrox club have confirmed. The Londoners, who finished second in the Barclays Premier League behind Manchester United, will head to Glasgow with a squad full of international stars.

Chelsea are on the look-out for a new manager after the departure of Carlo Ancelotti yesterday, but 50 million striker Fernando Torres will be joined by the likes of John Terry, Frank Lampard, Ashley Cole, Petr Cech and Michael Essien. Clydesdale Bank Premier League champions Rangers will unfurl the flag ahead of the first SPL match of the new campaign at Ibrox on the weekend of 23 July. They will then play an away SPL game the following weekend before opting out of the third weekend of fixtures to host Chelsea. Rangers' new manager Ally McCoist told the club's official website: "We are delighted to confirm Chelsea will be heading to Ibrox in August. They are a fantastic club and their squad is packed with world-class players so I have no doubt this game will capture the imagination of our supporters. We enjoyed a fantastic match against them in 2007 (Rangers winning 2-0] and Ibrox was packed and I am sure the fans will turn out in huge numbers once again to watch us in action against such a high-profile English Premier League side."
