Racing: Frankie Dettori bags Deauville double

The Wow Signal got the better of fellow Royal Ascot hero Hootenanny to maintain his unbeaten record in the Prix Morny, giving John Quinn a first Group One success on the Flat, while Ribbons struck for James Fanshawe in the Prix Jean Romanet.

Runaway Ayr maiden winner The Wow Signal stamped his class on the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot and was the 9-4 joint-favourite for this  assignment together with Jean-Claude Rouget’s filly Ervedya.

Ride Like The Wind took the field along in the early part of the race, with Wesley Ward’s American challenger and Windsor Castle winner Hootenanny taking over from two furlongs down.

Dettori had to get to work aboard The Wow Signal when the pace increased, but his mount responded admirably to set up a grandstand finish.

Hootenanny did his best to hold on as the post loomed, but The Wow Signal wore him down late in the day to take top honours.

The triumph meant Quinn joined an elite band to have trained a top-level winner on the level and over jumps, with Countrywide Flame having clinched the Fighting Fifth at Newcastle in 2012.

Quinn said: “We’re delighted. It’s a great day. These are the days you dream of. He’s crying out for seven furlongs and I would say it will either be the  Dewhurst or the Prix Jean-Luc  Lagardere for him next.”

Ribbons was a surprise but brilliant winner of the Jean Romanet, and has Ascot on Champions Day or the Prix de l’Opéra among her options.

On Saturday, Mutual Regard set the seal on another memorable Betfred Ebor meeting as he struck for Johnny Murtagh.

Spotted moving strongly down the straight in his cheekpieces, 19-year-old Louis Steward, who claims 5lb, eased to the front inside the two-furlong marker and had enough in the tank to win a battle with Van Percy by a length and a quarter. Elidor was third and the heavily-backed 9-2 favourite Pallasator ran a big race to be fourth from his wide draw in stall 22, which meant he had to be dropped in almost last on leaving  the gates.

“I never won this race as a jockey, but I was second a few times,” said Murtagh. “Ascot might be on his agenda now, but we’ll see about the Melbourne Cup as he loves fast ground.”

Muhaarar (7-1) lunged late to take a thrilling Irish Thoroughbred Marketing Gimcrack Stakes for trainer Charlie Hills and jockey Paul Hanagan.

Mark Johnston carried on from where he left off at the Glorious meeting as Bow Creek completed a valuable Goodwood double for the  Middleham trainer in the Doom Bar Celebration Mile. Following four wins at last month’s showpiece meeting, Johnston returned to Sussex to snaffle the £100,000 32Red Stakes with front-running Almargo.

Bow Creek (9-2) then employed similar tactics in the Group Two but very nearly threw it away when drifting dramatically to the left and reducing his winning margin to a length and a half.
