Racing: Agent scores again with Goal

AFTER a busy 24 hours on transfer deadline day, football agent and horse owner Willie McKay hit the back of the net with Goal in the CMYK Digital Solutions Handicap at Musselburgh.

The well-backed 7-4 favourite, trained by Gordon Elliott, scrambled home by a neck from Summer Dancer under Robert Winston with Joshua The First the same distance back in third.

McKay said: “It was a busy day on Monday and we did deals involving half a dozen players. This has been a decent day as well as we fancied Goal a wee bit and he has delivered the goods.”

Elliott and Winston went on to complete a short-priced treble with Diyala, who fairly romped to a six-length success in the 32Red Handicap.

In the closest finish of the afternoon, Keith Dalgleish-trained Kano’s Ghirl and Tom Eaves pipped Secret Applause by a nose in the 32Red Selling Stakes. Kano’s Ghirl carries the colours of Lamont Racing who named the filly after Glasgow-based children’s charity Kano Foundation, which takes youngsters under 13 to some top football matches.

Meanwhile, Hamilton have bolstered their management team with two key appointments. Ashley Moon has been promoted from commercial manager to the new role of head of marketing and operations while Ann Doyle has been recruited as sales manager. Both will report to chief executive Vivien Kyles who says the appointments underline recent business success and ambitions for further growth by continuing to increase the number of events being held at the racecourse throughout the year.

She said: “After a testing 2012 when more than a quarter of our race meetings were affected by the weather, the response of my team this year has been typically positive and determined, resulting in a successful first half of the year.”

Hamilton’s final three fixtures of the 2013 Flat season are on 22, 23 and 30 September.

Today, although Saint Boniface hardly boasts encouraging statistics, he can finally record his first victory in 15 attempts in the BBC Radio Bristol Handicap at Bath. Despite having shown spits and spots of form at Lingfield and Brighton, the Peter Makin-trained Saint Boniface had slipped to a career-low mark over here a couple of weeks ago.

He very nearly cashed in, too, as he enjoyed the step up to a mile and a quarter to take second place behind Precision Five.

Considering that rival was in the middle of a golden run, Makin must have been very happy with Saint Boniface, especially as he was entering unchartered territory from a distance perspective. Little wonder he is hurled back into the fray over course and distance in what arguably looks an even weaker race than last time.

The chestnut son of Bahamian Bounty has gone up just 1lb for this, while Seb Sanders’ return to the saddle is never a bad thing.
