Profound Beauty in Melbourne frame

PROFOUND Beauty took the first step to another possible crack at the Melbourne Cup when making a winning seasonal debut at Leopardstown.

Fifth in the race that stops a nation in 2008, the six-year-old mare took her prize money total to over 300,000 when flooring Age Of Aquarius in the Seamus & Rosemary McGrath Memorial Saval Beg Stakes.

Dermot Weld's charge was having her first race since finishing fourth in last September's Irish St Leger, but still had the edge over the Aidan O'Brien-trained odds-on shot. Johnny Murtagh took the favourite into the lead over three furlongs out after Donegal had made the running but Pat Smullen always had him in his sights. He brought Profound Beauty (4-1) alongside and eased into the lead with a furlong to go to get the verdict by half a length.

Six Of Hearts (10-1) gave Cecil Ross his biggest training success when taking the Vodafone Ireland Foundation Supports Gaisce Ballycorus Stakes. Last year's winner Duff set out to make all the running but the odds-on shot was pressed first by King Jock and then by Six Of Hearts, who got his head in front inside the final furlong for Davy Moran to land this Group Three prize by half a length.

The Irish Flat jockeys defeated their National Hunt counterparts 79 points to 63 in a two-race challenge to commemorate the 25th year of Gaisce – the President's Awards. They virtually assured success when occupying all but fourth out of the first six places in the Croabh Chomortas Na Marcach Flat v Jump Jockeys Challenge Handicap. The race was won by champion apprentice Gary Carroll on Elyaadi for trainer John Queally, the 7-1 chance romping home by five lengths from Essex.

Meanwhile, Swiss Dream earned her place in the starting stalls at Royal Ascot as she provided David Elsworth with the second leg of a near 20-1 double in the Stablecare Maiden Stakes at Newmarket. The 7-4 favourite received only hand and heels assistance from Jimmy Fortune to dash clear.

Elsworth now has the choice of the Albany Stakes or the Queen Mary for the speedy daughter of Oasis Dream, with Barshiba providing him with his most recent Royal Ascot win in the 2007 Sandringham.

Elsworth's Haljaferia provided ecstatic 2003 Ebor-winning owner, Ray Standring, with a second success inside 24 hours as Louise Allan drove him clear in the Jose Hair Design & Male Grooming Ladies' Handicap at Newmarket. Standring was on the mark with Summer Dancer at Beverley on Saturday afternoon and he followed up as the 13-2 chance struck by a length and a half.

Monterosso is another heading for Berkshire in a little over two weeks after Frankie Dettori guided Mark Johnston's three-year-old to a thumping success in the Johns Practice Handicap.

Having finished in the wake of Saturday's impressive winner Green Moon on his previous outing, the progressive colt was sent off the 5-2 favourite and easily earned his place in Johnston's powerful Royal Ascot squad.

• Sajjhaa is to leap straight from maiden company to the highest level by taking her chance in the Investec Oaks at Epsom on Friday. The filly, trained by Michael Jarvis, was slashed in price from 16-1 to a general 8-1 after she was left in the Classic at Saturday's confirmation stage.

• Tom McLaughlin was handed a 28-day ban for failing to ride out on odds-on favourite Vaultage at Catterick on Saturday. The 8-15 chance appeared to have the Bet Totepool On 0800 221 221 Median Auction Maiden Fillies' Stakes in the bag, but was caught in the final strides by Royal Cheer and beaten a head.
