Attendance: 3000.

The first meeting took place during a season of frustration for Edinburgh. They out-scored their visitors by four tries to three (through Stuart Lang, Graham Shiel, Matt Proudfoot and Craig Chalmers) and, in a qualification campaign that went to the wire, eventually lost 21-23 to Ulster who went on to claim the trophy in an English clubs’ boycott year.

Edinburgh fielded an a back line comprising past or future caps – Gilmour, Stanger, Mayer, Tait, Murray, Chalmers, Redpath – but never got close to their hosts.

2002-03

Attendance: 4,372.

A disallowed “try” by Todd Blackadder cost Edinburgh early momentum. Mike Blair and Chris Paterson played in this one.

Toulouse were in unstoppable form running in six tries as Edinburgh foundered in a season where,coincidentally, they did beat London Irish.

2003-04

Edinburgh 23, Toulouse 16

Attendance 3,520.

Edinburgh’s only victory in the series on the way into the knock-outs resulted in visiting internationalist captain Fabien Pelous remarking that they were “a better team than Scotland.” Alas, they allowed Toulouse a losing bonus point which was to put the teams on a collision course later.

Edinburgh were always chasing in this whitewash, conceding four tries.

Toulouse 36, Edinburgh 10

(Stade Municipal):

A step too far for Edinburgh in front of a crowd of 36,500 in their first venture into the knock-out stages. But there was a consolation try for Marcus Di Rollo, who later joined Toulouse for an ill-fated spell revolving around an alleged heart complaint which led to difficulties insuring the player who later resumed his career back in Scotland.

2007-08

Edinburgh 15, Toulouse 19

Attendance: 3,393

Edinburgh out-scored the visitors’ two tries (Nick De Luca and John Houston) to one and afterwards coach Andy Robinson said: “I feel sorry for the players – they didn’t deserve to lose that.” Maybe, but for De Luca the match was a springboard on to the Test scene.

Toulouse 34, Edinburgh 10

Edinburgh travelled buoyed by a famous win at home to Leicester Tigers the previous weekend but were no match for a home side who had two tries from Vincent Clerc on his way to becoming top try-scorer in tournament history.
