Premier Division: Big hitting Davidson ensures Grange remain top of the pile

STUART Davidson smashed 66 from just 39 balls to keep Grange top of the SNCL Premier Division table with a home win over Edinburgh rivals Carlton on Saturday.

The all-rounder only came to the crease in the 41st over with his side 169-5 batting first at Raeburn Place. At that stage 210 or 220 looked to be a decent total, but Davidson's big hitting took them well over that to 263-5.

Blake Dean and Charles Legget came in for particular punishment, 27 coming off the 49th over bowled by the Australian and 17 coming off the last over from Legget.

That period of the game swung the balance of the match in Grange's favour and the visitors never really recovered.

Earlier Cammy Coles had led the way with 55 opening the batting for Grange, while spinner Tom Clarke bowled really well to take 4-37.

With a number of key batsmen missing Carlton were always going to struggle to chase 264 to win and when Ani Majumdar and captain Stevie Gilmour went for six and four respectively things looked even tougher.

Dean looked good for 25 before he was bowled by a beauty from Jonny Gray and Oli Tame dug in for 53, but run outs for teenager Nick Hunt and Nathan Pietsch cost them dear.

In the end Carlton were all out for 206 with Clarke being the last man to depart to debutante spinner Drew Weir.

Over at Myreside, Forfarshire secured a hard fought victory to scupper Watsonians chances of seven wins in a row. The Edinburgh side had the visitors -who were missing captain Ryan Watson who was a late call off - 95-6 at one point, but a great partnership between pro Kelby Pickering and Dennis Petrie helped them recover to 203-8.

The Australian hit a half century, while Petrie made 47 not out as the Watsonians bowling and fielding levels dropped.

In reply Watsonians looked set for victory when Ryan Flannigan was going well, but once he was run out the innings faltered. In the end they were all out for 198 in a thrilling finale.
