Premier B rugby: Heriot’s power past Hamilton to top table

With the race for the top two spots in RBS Premier B which will guarantee a place in the Premier Division next season hotting up, Heriot’s took full advantage of Hamilton to claim a bonus point and boost their points differential significantly.

Fraser Brown, Max Learmonth and Junior Bulumakau each had try doubles in the 12-try, 74-14 win, with Hamilton collecting a penalty try converted by Ross Ingles, the other try coming from his brother Craig which he duly converted.

Heriot’s now top Premier B as they move two points clear of Stewart’s Melville, who went down 24-7 to Edinburgh Accies at Raeburn Place. Ruairidh Bonner, Tom Drennan, Ewan Bonner and Andy Findlater ran in the tries which clinched what could be an important bonus point, Ruairidh Bonner slotted two conversions and the Stew-Mel reply from Andy Hughes’ try and Mike Hanning’s conversion was not enough to worry a confident-looking Accies outfit.

Hawick put themselves in the mix with a 17-12 win at Old Anniesland. They turned round 17-5 ahead of Hawks with tries from Neil Renwick and Graham Hogg, Renwick adding both conversions and a penalty. After the break, Hawks could only add a Kerr Gossman try, converted by Mike Martin, to Ross Miller’s first half score. At home against a Hawick side who played for 18 minutes with 13 men, this has to be a massive blow to Hawks’ prospects of playing in the top tier next season.

Jed racked up their first win in Premier B in some style with a 28-20 win over Watsonians at Riverside. Gregor Young had a brace of tries for Jed, with the scores from David Gobbie and Ross Goodfellow ensuring the bonus point. Ewan Scott landed two penalties and a conversion. Jamie Niven, Dylan Brass and Mark Rennie crossed for Watsonians and Brian Walls kicked a penalty and conversion.
