Portobello duo set to battle for Harry Lauder Trophy

Past and present Portobello golf champions clash tonight (5.30pm) in the annual Harry Lauder Trophy final.

While reigning champion John Ralston won 5&4 against 14-year-old Kieran Cantley from Liberton, John Semple, the only player to win the club’s internal title five times, had a tougher task against another teenager, Matthew Craigie.

Two down with five to play, Semple, a previous Harry
Lauder winner now at
Duddingston, bounced back to win at the 19th.

After Semple had chipped in to square at the 16th Craigie hit his tee shot to five feet at the short 18th.

However, the putt missed and Semple grabbed a lifeline by getting up and down from off the green then winning with a par at the extra hole.

In the Brand Cup for Portobello members, Gary Reilly faces Lochend head greenkeeper Mark Dunlop.
