Police to write to SFA over Neil Lennon celebration

Neil Lennon could be forced to answer questions from the Scottish Football Association after it emerged last night that Tayside police are set to complain about the Celtic manager's behaviour during last Sunday's win over Dundee United.

Celtic's 2-1 win at United last weekend was full of controversy. Lennon clashed with referee Dougie McDonald following his decision to reverse a penalty award, and for that incident he was dealt with by the official there and then.

But Lennon also sprinted down the Tannadice track when Gary Hooper netted in the 88th minute to celebrate a dramatic victory and this has been viewed as a potentially inflammatory gesture which could have incited crowd trouble at a fixture which has grown increasingly stormy in recent seasons.

In response to Lennon's celebrations, Celtic supporters rushed forward towards the track causing security concerns, and, after discussions among top-level officers working at the match, the police have decided to formalise their complaint.

The match commander has drafted a letter to send to both the SFA and the SPL outlining their displeasure at Lennon's behaviour and will now leave it up to the governing bodies to act.

United manager Peter Houston criticised Lennon in his post-match interview and will also face disciplinary action, meaning both managers could find themselves in the Hampden dock together.

Speaking at full-time, Houston hit out at Lennon, saying: "Celtic were celebrating as if they won the league. I am going to start running down the track for 30 yards after we score a goal. Celtic seem to get away with it, the whole backroom staff, the lot."

Celtic entertain Rangers this weekend in the first Old Firm clash of the season. Both teams go into tomorrow's fixture at Celtic Park with maximum points from the opening eight games.
