Pink Sapphire shines for Richard Hannon

Richard Hannon's new link with the Coolmore empire bore fruit when Pink Sapphire took the British Stallion Studs EBF Ashbrittle Stud Maiden Fillies' Stakes at Salisbury.

The chestnut is the first to carry the colours of the powerful owner-breeding operation, who bought into last week's Queen Anne winner Canford Cliffs. There should be more to be heard from Pink Sapphire, the 4-11 favourite on account of her fourth-placed finish on her debut at Haydock, and she collected with plenty in hand for Richard Hughes.

"I like her a lot," said Hannon. "She's the first I've had for Coolmore and I thought she would win last time but it turned out to be a very good race. She might just end up going for the Cherry Hinton Stakes."

In Cumbria meanwhile, Miami Gator (12-1) put up a bold front-running effort to land the Lloyd Motor Group Carlisle Bell in the hands of Andrew Elliott.

The rider was keen to take an early position and hurried through to sit in front of Vito Volterra and set what seemed to be a fair pace.

Miami Gator and Vito Volterra were still neck and neck two furlongs out as the others tried to reel them back in, but it was too late.

Elliott got an excellent tune out of his mount, and Miami Gator responded to his every urging to run out one and three-quarter lengths clear.

Take It To The Max, the 4-1 favourite, could finish no better than third while Veroon took fourth.

There are seven races at Hamilton this evening, and William Buick has been booked to ride four of Mark Johnston's horses, including Shalloon who should win the Patersons of Greenoakhill Open Maiden Stakes. A 160,000 guineas yearling purchase, he is related to plenty of winners and the rivals he faces tonight do not look up to much.

As with tradition, the card starts with a Ladies Amateur race over Hamilton's maximum trip of one mile, five furlongs so it is not just the horses but also the lady amateur riders who have to be at their fittest to get the trip.

The serious side to the fun and games is money raised on the night for Cash for Kids, with any funds donated by racegoers dedicated to helping children in the local area.
