Paul Robinson lives dream as Millwall triumph at last

MILLWALL captain Paul Robinson said he was still in dreamland yesterday after scoring the winning goal at Wembley on Saturday to secure promotion to the Coca-Cola Championship.

Robinson, 28, who has been with the club since his days as a trainee, grabbed the only goal of a tense League One play-off final to see off a Swindon side who failed to live up to their potential at the rain-sodden national stadium.

His moment of glory arrived in the 39th minute as Danny Schofield's corner evaded everyone and, having seen the ball bounce off his body, the centre-back swivelled to smash home from four yards. His goal banished the memory of Millwall's defeat to Scunthorpe in the final 12 months ago and ensured the south London club triumphed in the play-offs at the sixth time of asking.

Robinson said: "To captain a team, to score the winning goal and to lift up a trophy at Wembley – as a kid kicking around in the back garden that's all I ever dreamed of. It's a squad of heroes, a squad to go down in history. "

Robinson was almost guilty of handing Swindon a route back into the game when Charlie Austin latched onto his misplaced header. However, the ball bounced up off the much-maligned Wembley turf, hit Austin's shin and flew horribly wide.

Robinson said: "Sometimes that's the bit of luck you need."

In yesterday's League Two play-off final, Dagenham & Redbridge, who finished seventh in the table, beat Rotherham 3-2 in a pulsating encounter.

Paul Benson gave them the lead after 38 minutes only for Rotherham to level a minute later through Ryan Taylor, who also cancelled out Danny Green's 56th-minute goal. In 70 minutes, however, Jon Nurse scored what proved to be the winner for Dagenham & Redbridge, whose manager John Still described the result as "a fairy story".
