Patrick records a historic hat-trick

SCOTTISH YOUNG PROS: Former Walker Cup man David Patrick became the first player in almost half a century to win the title three years in a row by beating Neil Fenwick in a play-off at West Lothian. Patrick, who is attached to Elie Sports Centre, shot closing rounds of 69 and 66 for a five-under-par total of 279, matched by Fenwick after the Dunbar player signed off with scores of 69 and 67. Patrick came out on top in the play-off with a birdie at the first extra hole to secure the £1,000 prize and become the first player since Bobby Walker in 1962 to complete a hat-trick of wins.

The pair finished four shots ahead of third-placed Gareth Wright after the West Linton player shot 68 and 70 on the final day. Nairn Dunbar’s Malcolm Isaacs, who led by two shots at the halfway stage and was still out in front after a third-round 70, closed with a 76 and had to settle for fourth.

Former Curtis Cup player Michele Thomson tied for seventh.
