Paget poised to bring the glory days back to Vale

VALE OF LEITHEN manager Rab Paget is determined to be the first Victoria Park boss to lead his team to glory in more than 18 years when they contest the Image Printers East of Scotland Qualifying Cup final against Gretna 2008 in Hawick tomorrow.

Vale, one of the most successful clubs during the 1970s and 1980s, have not lifted a trophy since their Scottish Qualifying Cup (South) success in 1992.

It is a long spell which Paget intends to rectify. "I want this cup for the players who have worked so hard but also for the committee who have been starved of success for too many years," he said. "Not everyone who plays football gets a chance to win something and there is not one player in my squad who has won anything at this level. That makes Sunday an exciting day for Vale of Leithen Football Club. The players should have belief in themselves."

Vale have already beaten Gretna 2008 3-2 in the First Division in a match which Paget states was not as close as the scoreline suggests. "We were leading 3-0 going into stoppage time and allowed them to score two very late goals. Under their manager, Stuart Rome, Gretna play some really good football and they are young and enthusiastic which makes them difficult to peg back."

Paget has captain John Hall and Geri Rossi definitely out while there will be late fitness tests for Andy Martin and Darren Gillon. Aaron Somerville is Vale's main threat in front of goals while Paul Greenhill has had a fantastic season in midfield where he sits in and breaks play up.

Gretna 2008, meanwhile, are in their second cup final since joining the East of Scotland League at the beginning of last season and are optimistic they can pick up the trophy.

"Promotion into the Premier Division has always been our objective this season," said Rome. "However, this is the biggest cup competition in our league and it's fantastic that two First Division sides have reached the final.

"We have been playing well of late with all my units doing their jobs."

Rome has a full squad to choose from with strikers Tony Nicholson and Dan Carmichael in top form.

• THE game at Albert Park kicks off at 2.00pm with extra-time and penalties, if necessary and admission is 5 for adults and 2 for concessions.
