Paget eager to close gap on Spartans

Whitehill WELFARE, who have witnessed arch-rivals Spartans lift the Central Taxis Premier Division title for the past three seasons, are determined to bridge the gap in this coming campaign with manager Rab Paget saying: "We definitely want to get closer to Spartans who are still the benchmark for all other clubs in the East Seniors."

Paget, who took over the Rosewell club's managerial reins midway through last season, wants a big improvement from his revamped squad.

"I have only retained six players and, therefore, made a few new signings," he said.

Paget's new-look team have their first outing tomorrow when they travel to play SFL Third Division side Clyde, kick-off 1pm.

Elsewhere, Edinburgh City continue their pre-season programme with a friendly against Bishop Auckland at Meggetland, kick-off 3pm. "They will certainly test our fitness while also giving us the opportunity to look at a couple of trialists," said City's co-manager, Gary Jardine.

Andrew Stobie, City's goalkeeper who was on loan from East Fife, has signed permanently with City, while Ruaraidh Scott returns to the squad.
