Wimbledon 2024 draw: Andy Murray gets Tuesday boost, young Scot could face Novak Djokovic

Murray to take on Czech Machac in repeat of Miami epic

Andy Murray has been drawn to face Tomas Machac in the first round of Wimbledon.

The two-times champion is in the bottom half of the draw and will take on the in-form Czech, currently ranked 36 in the world. The duo met earlier this year in Miami, with Murray rupturing ligaments in his ankle during an epic three-set defeat by the 23-year-old.

Murray will be pleased that he has landed in the part of the draw away from defending champion Carlos Alcaraz, as it means he is guaranteed a Tuesday start. Murray is waiting until the very last minute to ascertain whether he is fit to play the tournament after undergoing a spinal cyst procedure on his back. He is now likely to make a call on Monday.

Murray, who won Wimbledon in 2013 and 2016, is widely expected to retire from a glittering tennis career at the end of the summer, although those plans have been thrown into disarray by his latest injury.

Should Murray overcome Machac, then he would play either 26th seed Francesco Cerundolo or Roman Safiullin in the second round.

He is not the only Scot in the men's draw this year, with Jacob Fearnley from Edinburgh making his debut as a wildcard. The 22-year-old will play Spanish qualifier Alejandro Moro Canas and should he win, he could face Novak Djokovic in the second round, with the Serb facing Vit Kopriva.

Three British men will also play on the opening day. Arthur Fery takes on Daniel Altmaier, Liam Broady comes up against Botic van de Zandschulp and Charles Broom plays Stan Wawrinka.

On Tuesday, British No 1 Jack Draper plays Elias Ymer, with four other British men in action: Dan Evans v Alejandro Tabilo, Cameron Norrie v Facundo Diaz Acosta, Henry Searle v Marcos Giron and Billy Harris v Juame Munar.

Former US Open champion Emma Raducanu is one of a number of British women due to play at Wimbledon this year and she takes on Ekaterina Alexandrova in her first-round match on Monday.
