O'Neil goes through after shot of his life

BOYS' AMATEUR: Glasgow 18-year-old Conor O'Neil conjured up a career-best shot on his way to the quarter-finals of the Boys' Amateur championship at Barassie yesterday.

He earned his last-eight spot with a one-hole win over Prudoe's Andrew Scrimshaw but, at the 20th hole in the morning's second round a miracle 210-yard four iron from the rough to seven feet set up a win over Italy's Emanuele Sesia.

Pollok member O'Neil will carry home hopes in this morning's quarter-finals after Liam Johnston, Scott Gibson and Ewan Scott were all ousted. Johnston went down 2 and 1 in the second round to Denmark's Mads Sogaard while Southerness youngster Gibson departed in the third round when Spain's Adrian Otaegui holed a 25-footer for birdie on the 18th.

St Andrews 15-year-old Scott also exited in the last 16 after a one-hole defeat to Ballymena's Dermot McElroy.
