Oldham strikes GB gold with faultless horizontal bar display

Sam Oldham won Team GB's third gold medal and eighth overall at the Youth Olympic Games after a faultless routine saw the Nottingham gymnast triumph in the men's horizontal bar final.

Oldham was first to go but held his nerve to post a score of 14.375 points before facing an anxious wait as none of the seven subsequent competitors were able to surpass his mark.

"I'm really happy because that sort of made up for everything that has gone on this week," he said.

"It's been a difficult week and when I came here I just wanted to get a gold medal and I've done it now, which is great."

Oldham had seen his chances of a medal in last Wednesday's individual all-around final ruined by a critical mistake on the same apparatus. Another error earlier in the evening, when he stumbled upon landing, meant he missed out on a medal in the parallel bars by 0.100 points, finishing fourth. Ukrainian Oleg Stepko won gold.

A poor third dive cost Tom Daley as the 16-year-old could only manage ninth in the three-metre springboard final in which China's Qiu Bo took gold.

Daley, who is recovering from a tricep injury, said: "It happens on the day in sport and I just have to keep my chin up going into the junior world championships next week and make sure my tricep feels better so I can dive on 10m. I'm going to watch the 10m final and hopefully not feel too gutted that I'm not in it. Now is the time I wish my tricep wasn't bad so I could show people I can dive well.

"It's feeling okay, just got some ice on it, it's still sore at some parts but I tried to compromise some of my diving technique - but it's not an excuse. The Commonwealth Games is the next big one so I'm looking forward to that."

Earlier on Day Eight, Charlie Grice ran a personal best and benefited from Abdelhadi Labali's disqualification to win bronze in the boys' 1000m. Grice crossed the line fourth at a sweltering Bishan Stadium in a time of two minutes 21.85 seconds but was promoted to third after the Moroccan was penalised for stepping off the track to claim Team GB's seventh medal.

"I saw the boy go off the track about three times so I knew that he must be disqualified," said Grice. "I was in fifth position and I knew he'd be disqualified so I just kept an eye on the other guy and kicked on with about 50 metres to go, which was the plan."

Mohammed Geleto took gold in a time of two mins 19.54secs after the Ethiopian attacked down the back straight to break clear of his rivals.
