No Rangers offer for David Goodwillie, reveal Dundee United

Rangers manager Ally McCoist wants to add Tannadice striker David Goodwillie to his squad but baulked at the 2 million asking price he was quoted for the Scotland international on 20 June. There has been no dialogue between the clubs since, despite Cardiff City looking to steal the player from under Rangers' nose, with Bluebirds manager Malky Mackay close to reaching an agreement with United for the 22-year-old striker.

McCoist, who has missed out on a series of summer targets, has publicly declared his wish to sign Goodwillie for Rangers despite the fact he has not yet made United an offer. "I'd love the opportunity to speak to David," said McCoist on Monday, "but sometimes you don't get that opportunity. Some of the agents like to guard their players from talking. I would hope that David Goodwillie and Lee Wallace are not dead transfers as far as we are concerned."

New Ibrox owner Craig Whyte, who is facing increasing pressure from the fans to open his chequebook, also went on record to claim the Tangerines are overvaluing their star asset. But Thompson, who is in advanced talks with Cardiff and has also been contacted by Blackpool chairman Karl Oyston, is bemused to hear Rangers talk up their continued interest when his phone has stayed silent.

He said: "Rangers have not been in touch with us since Monday of last week.

"They asked us what we were looking for for David, we told them and we have heard nothing since.

"No bid from Rangers has been put on the table."
