Nine Scots in 'high-quality' British team

NINE Scots have been named in the 57-strong Aviva Great Britain and Northern Ireland team for this month's European Junior Championships in Estonia.

Described by GB&NI team leader Kevin Tyler as "one of the largest teams but also one of the highest quality teams we've sent to a European Junior Championships," the team contains four European junior rankings leaders alongside a host of Scots talent.

Kirsten McAslan is named in the individual 400m and 4x400m relay squad following her impressive lifetime best to take silver at the European Trials in Bedford and victory at the weekend while representing GB Juniors in Mannheim, Germany.

Myra Perkins, also an event winner in Mannheim, is named in the hammer and will hope to replicate the form that saw her take the Scottish U20 record to 61.94m at the British Universities Championships in May.

Long jumper James McLachlan is selected on the back of his 7.63m record jump while competing for Loyola University in America, while Emma Nuttall goes in the high jump having cleared a new outdoor best of 1.82m to secure victory at the European Trials event in Bedford and representing GB in Mannheim.

Cameron Boyek goes in the 1500m following medal winning performances at both the European Trials and last weekend's English Schools Championships.

Lasswade's Guy Learmonth is named in the 800m after recording a fourth place at the Trials, while club-mate Greg Louden travels as part of the 4x400m squad on the back of a bronze medal in Bedford

David Vernon goes in the 10,000m having raced over the shorter distance of 5,000m at the trials and there is a 4x400m relay berth for Zoey Clark, who steps up an age group for these championships having set two lifetime bests at the trials.
