Nikolay Davydenko into semis

Nikolay Davydenko defeated last year's runner-up Marin Cilic of Croatia 7-5, 6-3 to reach the semi-finals of the BMW Open in Munich.

Davydenko, who is seeded seventh, was runner-up in 2004. Cilic had won three of his four previous matches against the Russian, but has now lost the last two. Davydenko will next play Radomir Stepanek of the Czech Republic, who beat 2007 Munich champion Philipp Kohlschreiber, of Germany, 6-4, 6-0.

Philipp Petzschner, of Germany, edged Potito Starace of Italy 7-6 (3), 7-6 (6) to set up a semi-final against another German, fifth-seeded Florian Mayer, who overcame Bulgarian teenager Gregori Dimitrov 7-6 (4), 3-6, 6-4.

At the Serbia Open in Belgrade, Feliciano Lopez upset fourth-seeded fellow Spaniard Albert Montanes 6-4, 6-4 to reach the semi-finals, where he will play Filippo Volandri, after the Italian defeated Spain's Marcel Granollers, 6-2, 6-4. Lopez converted two out of nine break points to reach his first ATP semi-final of the year.

In the third quarter-final, Serbia's Janko Tipsarevic edged Somdev Devvarman, of India, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 and will next play the winner of the match between Novak Djokovic and Blaz Kavcic of Slovenia. The second-ranked Djokovic, of Serbia, is seeking his 26th consecutive victory this year.
