Newtongrange unable to hang on against Beith

This was a tough third-round Scottish Cup tie for Newtongrange but it was the visitors, Beith, who were lucky still to be in the competition at the end.

The match came to life after the break, Newtongrange opening up the Beith defence when they started to believe they could win this game.

The Star got the break they were looking for with quarter of an hour to go. Left winger Stuart Roseburgh cut in from the wing and curled a terrific shot into the far corner of the net.

They then had to play out the remaining 15 minutes without conceding a goal. They looked to have done that until, with only a couple of minutes remaining, Beith equalised to take the game to a replay next week. The goal came from a free kick which Star's new signing, keeper Gary O'Connor, blocked well but couldn't prevent striker Martin McGarvey looping the free ball over his head.

Newtongrange will feel they let Beith out of jail.
