Newbigging celebrates by watching X Factor

WHILE his players partied the night away, Bo'ness manager Willie Newbigging celebrated his side's famous Scottish Cup win over Queen's Park - by settling down to watch the X Factor on the box!

The Junior side stunned Third Division Spiders by dumping them out of the competition at the second round stage on Saturday, thanks to a spot-kick from Derek Fleming and a strike from Paul Shields 14 minutes from time.

It was a remarkable turn-around for Bo'ness, who had fallen behind to a James Brough header after just eight minutes. However, although his squad made the most of the win, Newbigging revealed that he didn't go overboard on the after-match celebrations.

He said: "A lot of the boys went out to celebrate after the game and big Chris Donnelly had a party at his house.

"I stayed in with the missus and watched the X Factor on Saturday night instead but I sat there in front of the tele- vision proud as punch. We didn't get much peace to watch the show to be honest, because my mobile phone was red hot with people phoning and texting to congratulate us on the result.

"I don't drink because I can't handle having a hangover the following day but it was still a brilliant weekend for everyone involved."

The final whistle at Newtown Park sparked wild celebrations both on and off the pitch for the Bo'ness players, their families and the club's supporters.

And Newbigging admitted that he was delighted by the attitude and character shown by his side throughout the 90 minutes, even when they found themselves a goal behind. Newbigging said: "Everyone was ecstatic at the end of the game. It couldn't have gone any better for us, if I am being honest. They scored after seven or eight minutes and obviously that really sets you back, so to come back from that was just superb. I think it says a lot about the character of the side - and we have got some real characters in there!

"Derek Fleming is probably the biggest character, he's the real joker of the dressing room and a great guy to have about the place."

Before kick-off, Newbigging had done a good job of convincing anyone who would listen that he thought his side were the rank outsiders to progress.

But he revealed that he had told his players a different story in the confines of the dressing room, adding: "I did a couple of interviews before the game, saying that we were the underdogs but, to be honest, I didn't believe that for a minute.

"Yes, maybe it was a bit of mind games with people, but that's all part of being a manager.

"I was saying that outside of the dressing room, but I knew that the boys had a chance, a great chance, of pulling it off.

"We've got a lot of experience running through our side, guys who have played the game professionally like Derek and Paul Shields. We've also got boys like Roger Duffin, who has played at centre-half for Scotland at junior level for the last ten years. Andy Shirra has also been about the game for a while and has bags of experience."

Newbigging insisted that he doesn't mind who his side get in the draw expected to be made on Thursday, although he conceded that the club's board will be keeping their fingers crossed for a home tie at least.
