Newbigging believes that Bo'ness can go on cup run

Bo'ness United will play Queen's Park, ten-times winners of the Scottish Cup, in the second round of this season's competition.

Bo'ness, who beat Selkirk 6-1 last Saturday, will be at home at Newtown Park and are sure to attract a big crowd for their first home tie in the Scottish Cup since 1939 when they hosted Hamilton Academical.

Willie Newbigging, the Bo'ness manager, said: "I'm obviously delighted that we have a home tie and I think that it will be really exciting for Bo'ness and everybody connected with the club and the town.

"I'd like to think that playing at home we have a chance because, quite often, you don't have to be the best team to win a cup tie.

"Throughout our team we have boys with loads of experience and things are going well at the moment so long may that continue.

"We have other important games to think about before Queen's Park but when it does come around we will certainly enjoy the occasion."

Spartans, who received a bye into the second round because they were last season's East of Scotland League champions, enter the competition with an away tie against Highland League club, Keith, who beat Vale of Leithen 3-1 last weekend.

Mike Lawson, Spartans joint manager, said: "To be honest, I'm disappointed that we didn't get the chance to play in the first round but obviously delighted to be in this round.

"It is no surprise to me that we are away from home and Keith will quite naturally fancy their chances.

"We know that we are capable of giving any team a game and, as usual, I will go and watch them before we play them."

Edinburgh City, 1-0 victors over Clachnacuddin thanks to a last-minute goal from Jorge Vinelli, have been rewarded with a home tie against the South of Scotland League champions, Threave Rovers from Castle Douglas.

John Green, City's co-manager, said: "Once more I will be on my travels to do my homework, something that paid off for our last round game against Clachnacuddin. Apart from the fact that Threave are champions I don't know too much about them. It certainly could have been a worse draw and it really is a 50/50 opportunity."

Whitehill Welfare manager Paul Cavanagh, who steered his side to a 2-0 away win against Lossiemouth, are at home to another Highland League side, Wick Academy, who will have to endure an epic 536-mile return journey.

"A home tie is fantastic," said Cavanagh. "Another Highland League team means another tough encounter but hopefully having beaten one already the players will take confidence from that."

Preston Athletic, if they beat Newton Stewart in their first round replay this coming Saturday, will be at home to SFL Third Division side Annan Athletic.
