Neil Lennon refuses to blame goalkeeper for concession of first goal

CELTIC manager Neil Lennon didn't rule out striking a deal with trialist goalkeeper Stipe Pletikosa after refusing to blame him for Wolves' first goal in the Premier league side's 2-0 victory at Parkhead last night.

It seemed that the Croatian may have harmed his contract chances by appearing poorly positioned for the 27th minute free-kick strike by Jamie O'Hara, but Lennon questioned the positioning of the defenders in front of him.

"We need a keeper and he has not done a lot wrong, but I can't say just now what the decision will be on him," the Celtic manager said.

"We'll talk about it tomorrow. He looked confident and you couldn't really point the finger at him for the goal. It seems it's gone through the wall and if the wall had done its job properly there probably wouldn't have been a goal.

"I haven't had a chance to talk to Woodsie (goalkeeping coach Steve Woods]. He knows more about goalkeeping than me and he was looking from a different angle."

Lennon conceded it was difficult for the other trialists Katlego Mphela and Milos Lacny, with the strikers only given 45 minutes each.

"They did OK; there were bits and piece with Mphela having a header and Lacny a couple of chances."

The Celtic manager delighted in "great performances" from James Forrest, Adam Matthews, Cha Du-Ri and Charlie Mulgrew.

Wolves counterpart Mick McCarthy also spoke warmly of Mulgrew.

"I admire him for going back to Aberdeen to build his career," he said of the 25-year-old who "wasn't half the player with us", a reference to an unhappy spell with the west Midlands club. McCarthy also maintained Christophe Berra was ready to cement his place in the Scotland line-up.

"He's a great character. He played in a team that was scrapping last season, so that shows you he has a good mentality," McCarthy said.

"He had a good season. I left him out towards the end and his nose was out of joint, as everyone's is when I leave them out.

"But we took seven points out of the last 12 so my decision was vindicated. But he's back in the side and having a good pre-season."
