Musselburgh's Renton sticks to his task

MUSSELBURGH ATHLETIC clinched their place in the fourth round of the Fife & Lothians Cup with a dramatic penalty shoot-out win over Super League rivals Whitburn.

Musselburgh have recovered recently from a mid-season blip while Whitburn have taken ten points from the last 12 in league games, so supporters were certain of a cracking cup tie.

Whitburn opened the scoring in the seventh minute when Chris Dolan chipped the keeper from a what looked like an offside position.

Musselburgh, though, drew level with a header from Mattu King just before the half hour.

Into the second half and Whitburn's Eamon McNelis was brought crashing to the ground by Chris Gordon. Dolan stepped up but his shot was saved by keeper Kieron Renton.

However, Whitburn's Colin Strickland gave his side the lead again after 78 minutes only for Musselburgh sub Chris Renton to rise first to an Adam Nelson free-kick and head home the equaliser.

There was no more time for either side to mount another attack and the penalty shoot-out followed. Whitburn have a terrible record in shoot-outs and this one was prove no different.

Colin Leiper, Scott Gormley and Chris Dolan all had their penalties saved by Musselburgh keeper Renton.

During the 90 minutes and the following shoot-out he saved an incredible four penalties and deservedly won the Man of the Match award.

In the East of Scotland Cup, Edinburgh faced a tough challenge when they drew Super League side Camelon at home. And so it proved with the visitors running out 2-0 winners in a hard-fought contest.

On the score sheet for the League Cup winners were Colin Allison in the 15th minute and Joe Savage after 50 minutes.

In the other game played last night, Stoneyburn faced Bathgate in a second-round tie.

The Super League side rested several players but were still to strong for the South Division team.

Only the efforts of the Stoneyburn keeper prevented a much higher score line than the 2-0 it finished up as. The scorers for Bathgate were Jim Lister and Steven Payne.
