Musselburgh treble stretches Hanagan's lead

CHAMPION jockey contender Paul Hanagan made the trip to Musselburgh worthwhile last night, picking up a treble at the East Lothian track.

The 29-year-old extended his lead in the Flat jockeys' championship to 14 over Richard Hughes and 17 over current champion Ryan Moore.

Hanagan was successful aboard Sensei (2-1) in the opening race, steered 8-15 favourite Bold Bidder to victory in the next, before booting home Oondiri at 13-8 to complete his treble.

A few hundred miles south of the "Honest Toun" at Brighton, Chris Catlin also rode three winners but his triumph was soured by picking up a suspension that rules him out for three days of the Glorious Goodwood meeting.

Punishment by the stewards is a hot topic at the moment, with Hughes opting to take a holiday rather than risk picking up a ban at a potentially lucrative time.

Catlin, who would not have the same sort of selection of rides at the other Sussex venue as his colleague, will be out for 27, 29 and 30 July for allowing Mandhooma to "drift left-handed into the whip for a considerable period" in the 3663 First For Food Service Handicap.

"I think it's a bit harsh as there was slight interference after the line," said Catlin. "I was hoping to ride at Goodwood so I might appeal. We'll see."

Catlin had mastered the ground bias on the idiosyncratic track as he went widest of all on Mandhooma, who was completing a hat-trick of Brighton victories in a fortnight. Peter Hiatt's filly scored over six and then five furlongs at the last couple of meetings, but was inexplicably sent off at 8-1 as she picked off her opponents with stealth tactics to defeat 11-8 favourite Piazza San Pietro by a head.

"She just seems to be coming to herself, and she does love it here," said Hiatt. "I'm not sure she will go over five again, but now we have started holding her up, I think she could get seven furlongs. Any time there's a race here, she'll be there."

Catlin kidded home the quirky Best One (12-1) for Ron Harris in the Hardings Catering Handicap, while things were simple for 13-8 favourite Celestial Girl in the hardingscatering.co.uk Handicap.

Meanwhile, bookmakers are divided on the market for the Darley Irish Oaks after Snow Fairy was one of four supplementary entries for the fillies' Classic at the Curragh on Sunday. Snow Fairy, trained by Ed Dunlop, justified the late entry fee for the Epsom equivalent when beating Meeznah by a neck and David Lanigan's charge was also among 17 possibles at the five-day confirmation stage.

Coral cannot split those two and French raider Rosanara, making the trio 100-30 co- favourites. Irish layers Paddy Power make Snow Fairy their 11-4 clear market leader.
