Musselburgh book place in quarter-finals

NO wonder Musselburgh manager David McGlynn looked a contented man after this one. His team didn't just book a place in tomorrow night's Emirates Scottish Cup quarter-final draw, they did so with a performance that was as close to perfect as you'll get.

Renfrew, flying high in the West Region Premier Super League First Division, didn't know what had hit them, though they will also point to the fact a whistle-happy and card-brandishing referee didn't exactly help them on a day when they created a solitary chance.

The home side went in front after just seven minutes through a superb free-kick from man of the match Chris King and were 2-0 up inside 20 minutes courtesy of a peach of a goal.

Striker Kris Renton produced a sublime touch close to the touchline to create some space for on-loan Raith Rovers winger Graham Beveridge.

He whipped over a cross and Paul Tansey, the hat-trick hero against Broughty Athletic the previous weekend, planted a header in the back of the net.

It was game over when King added his second from the penalty spot early in the second-half, with two more late goals from substitutes Matti King and Oliver Russell being the icing on Musselburgh's cake.

"Renfrew have been going really well in their league, so getting the first goal was important as it helped settle the nerves," said McGlynn.

"I think we were worthy winners, in the end. We communicated a lot better today and, as a result of that, didn't concede any of the stupid goals we had in games lately."

That is the main reason why Musselburgh have work on their plate in the final few weeks of the season to climb away from the relegation zone in the Super League.

Based on this performance, though, they should not only climb the table but also have a great chance of maintaining a great cup record.

McGlynn has a dangerous outfit again with King and Tansey back in the ranks. King has returned to Olivebank after a spell at Linlithgow, while Tansey turned his back on East Fife to link up again with his old manager and team-mates.

All over the park Musselburgh have players with senior experience, starting between the posts with former Blackburn shot-stopper Kieron Renton and running all the way through to his brother Kris, who was once a first-team player at Norwich.

Add in the likes of Guy Kerr, on loan from Berwick, Scott Gibson, another player back at Musselburgh after a spell at Airdrie, and ex-Kilmarnock and Inverness midfielder Alan Morgan and it's an exciting mix.

Indeed, if Musselburgh can get another home draw in tomorrow night's draw on Real Radio, then their hopes of a first Scottish Cup success in nearly 90 years will certainly start to heighten among the players and supporters.

"For a small club, our record in cups has been phenomenal - I think we've won six trophies in the last five years," said McGlynn. "Our luck in draws has been quite grim - this was our first home draw in any cup competition this season.

"Hopefully we get can another one in the quarter- finals because we've got matchwinners here, players who are able to create things for us, which is important."

Now McGlynn is hoping the Musselburgh fans in a decent crowd will have liked what they saw and keep backing his team for the rest of the season.

"Seeing five goals in a Scottish Cup game for a fiver is good value so hopefully they will come back," he declared.
