Music Show leads rivals a merry dance at Newmarket

MUSIC Show ended a wretched run of luck in Group 1 company as she put up a dazzling display in the Etihad Airways Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket.

Mick Channon's filly had circumstances conspire against her in both the English and Irish 1,000 Guineas while she came from well off the pace to finish just out of the frame in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot.

But she finally bagged a deserved Group 1 victory as Richard Hughes produced the 13-2 chance to swoop up the hill and deny the gallant Spacious by two lengths. Spacious was set to be swamped heading into the final furlong but James Fanshawe's five-year-old kept finding for Kieren Fallon and only Music Show could get on terms.

Jersey Stakes winner Rainfall was a three-quarter-length third with Coronation Stakes winner Lillie Langtry and dual Guineas heroine Special Duty well beaten in fifth and seventh respectively.

Channon said: "It is a relief when you know they are a Group 1 filly and it keeps going wrong, but it has gone right today and I am thrilled. She is the best three-year-old filly in the country and has beaten both the Coronation winner and the Guineas winner. I was angry after Ascot, but I am not blaming anyone as the filly never had a run. It is frustrating more than anything, but it is a good job I believe and most of the scribes wrote her off."

Memory's outstanding turn of foot released her from trouble yet again to maintain a three-race unbeaten record in the Irish Thoroughbred Marketing Cherry Hinton Stakes.

Memory was last on the rail with one of the six furlongs remaining, but such was the 5-4 favourite's acceleration, Hughes had switched across, picked off the entire field and still had time to sit up in the saddle as they crossed the line three-quarters of a length in front.

Royal Ascot form comes under the spotlight on the second afternoon of the Newmarket July meeting, with Norfolk winner Approve clashing with Coventry runner-up Elzaam in the TNT July Stakes.

John Gosden's Tazeez attempts a mile and a half for the first time in the Princess of Wales's sportingbet.com Stakes.

Among his rivals in the feature race of the day is Holberg, who created a massive impression on his first start for Godolphin at Goodwood last month, Barry Hills' Redwood, Jeremy Noseda's Sans Frontieres and the tough but consistent Spanish Moon, from Sir Michael Stoute's stable, who carries this afternoon's nap.
