Museum puts on 5p tour

THE Scottish Football Museum at Hampden will celebrate its tenth anniversary next month by offering admission for just five pence and providing each visitor with a special souvenir.

On the weekend of 9 and 10 July, the highly-rated museum will discard its normal admission price of 6 and instead charge the equivalent of the shilling it cost spectators to watch the first international match between Scotland and England at Hamilton Crescent in Glasgow back in 1872. In addition, a replica of the original match ticket for the game will be given to everyone who takes up the cut-price promotion.

Since opening its doors in 2001, the Scottish Football Museum has become one of the highest-rated visitor attractions in the country. It became the first museum to be awarded five-star status by national tourism organisation Visit Scotland.

Former Scotland midfielder Peter Lorimer was at Hampden yesterday to launch the celebrations of the museum's first decade. Lorimer once struck a penalty kick recorded at a speed of 107 miles per hour and museum visitors can try to match the Leeds United icon's power at a "hot-shot" machine in the Hampden warm-up area which forms part of the stadium tour.

Competitions will be held in various age categories, with prizes for the hardest shots.
