Motorsport: Cal Crutchlow leads the way in World Superbike qualifying in Monza

Sterilgarda Yamaha's Cal Crutchlow produced an excellent late lap to grab provisional pole for the Italian round of the World Superbike Championship at Monza.

The Coventry rider set a time of one minute 44.577 seconds on a drying track at the legendary Milan circuit to edge out the Ten Kate Honda of Northern Ireland's Jonathan Rea by two tenths of a second. It completed an impressive day for Crutchlow after he had set the fastest time during the opening practice session yesterday morning. Local hero Michel Fabrizio was third quickest for Ducati to provide the Italian marque with some much-needed encouragement following their disastrous performances at the previous round at Assen in Holland. BMW continued to show signs of the steps forward they have made this season with Troy Corser fourth for the German manufacturer and Ruben Xaus sixth, with both riders enjoying a spell at the top of the standings during the damp early running before the track dried out.
