Monte Carlo Masters: Andy Murray and Dom Inglot make progress

The British pair won 6-3, 6-4 with a controlled display in which they dominated the first set before having to battle hard for victory in the second.

The opening set went with serve until game eight when the British pair broke before serving out to take it 6-3. Breaks of serve were traded in games five and six of the second set before Murray and Inglot broke again in game nine and went on to triumph.

In the second round they could come up against Spanish wild-card pairing Rafael Nadal and Fernando Verdasco who were due to play Germany’s Philipp Kohlschreiber and Serbia’s Viktor Troicki.

In the singles in Monte Carlo, Britain’s Aljaz Bedene recorded his first ATP Tour win over Lukas Rosol with a straight-sets victory to set up a meeting with Nadal.

Bedene triumphed in just over an hour with a 6-2, 6-3 victory which owed much to his serving prowess as he sent down eight aces compared to none from his Czech opponent.

Slovenian-born Bedene, who recently lost his bid to play Davis Cup tennis for Britain, will next play fifth seed Nadal who received a bye in the first round.

Bedene needed five match points to see off Rosol, who is ranked one place below him in 61st.
