Misery for John Daly in US as he shoots 13 at one hole

ONE drive into thick grass ended John Daly's hopes of making the cut for the first time at the John Deere Classic in Illinois yesterday.

The former Open champion, who is in the field for next week's championship at Royal St George's, needed seven shots, each advancing his ball only a few feet, and a drop to get out of the rough right of the No 4 fairway and ended up with a 13 on the par-4 hole. He had stepped to the tee at 2-under for the tournament, which he was playing for the seventh time.

It wasn't Daly's worst hole on tour. He had an 18 at the sixth at the 1998 Bay Hill Invitational, when he hit into the water six times. Daly, who finished his round at ten-over 81, said he hit a terrible shot and deserved what he got.

"I really was hoping they wouldn't find it so I'd have to go back to the tee," Daly said. "So I hit it a couple of times and then took an unplayable, couldn't get it out, hit it again, took an unplayable, couldn't get it out.

"Then I got it far enough left that I could drop and then get in the bunker and two-putted for a 13. I just hit a horrible swing on four, just a heel shank. I deserved it."

Chez Reavie has shot to the top of the leaderboard after a round of 62 saw him emerge with the clubhouse lead.

The American, who shot a first-round 66, had an eagle at the second hole which was immediately followed by two birdies. Reavie sunk nine birdies in all and two bogeys to finish on 14 under, two strokes ahead of Steve Marino.

Marino remains second after a round of 66 that included an eagle on the second, a bogey on the fifth and four birdies to move to 12 under par.

Jhonattan Vegas moved up to third after a 64 as he looks for his second Tour win.

The Venezuelan sunk seven birdies, including three in a row from the second hole, to finish on 10 under after improving on his first-round 68.

Kirk Triplett also improved on his first round when he carded a 65 to move into a five-way share for fourth.

The American putted eight birdies, including five in the first seven holes, as well as two bogeys to move to nine under par.
