Miller says best signing is the gaffer

Celtic continue to overshadow Rangers in the transfer market but Ibrox striker Kenny Miller believes there have been plenty of positives for his club this summer.

Days after Rangers manager Walter Smith admitted he was struggling to make his first signing and feared some key players could be sold amid financial constraints, Wales midfielder Joe Ledley became Celtic manager Neil Lennon's third capture.

Rangers have lost Kris Boyd, their top goalscorer in the past four seasons, while Nacho Novo, DaMarcus Beasley and Stevie Smith have followed him out of the Ibrox exit door.

But Miller feared a bigger exodus and feels the return of Andy Webster is equivalent to a new signing. And, crucially, Miller was delighted former Scotland manager Smith decided to sign a one-year contract after initially deciding to retire.

"I don't think it's only myself, a lot of people respond to him," Miller said. "He treats you the right way and the players appreciate that. Everyone said at the end of the season the most important thing for the club was getting a bit of stability with the gaffer's future.

"Everyone wanted him to stay and the fact the club got that sorted was a big bonus and a big singing in itself. The players definitely got a lift from that."

Miller was keen to look on the bright side after Davie Weir and Kirk Broadfoot extended their Ibrox spells.

"We faced the prospect of losing at least six players in the summer. As it turned out we lost four and managed to keep a couple. The fact we managed to keep Davie and big Kirk is a big plus. We'll be looking to bring in another few to replace the lads that have gone, but there's plenty of time to do that."
