Midlothian foiled by Renfrewshire fightback

Angus top the first-day table at the Scottish Women's County Finals at Bothwell Castle. They beat Dumfries-shire 6½-2½ while Renfrewshire rallied from a 3-0 drubbing in the morning foursomes to salvage a 4½-4½ draw with Midlothian.

Renfrewshire's recovery saw them win the first four afternoon singles. In the top match former Scottish champion Megan Briggs (Kilmacolm) clinched a two-hole victory against Scotland team-mate Jane Turner (Craigielaw) by holing her third shot from 60 yards for an eagle-3 at the long 18th. When Baberton's experienced campaigner Karen Marshall stopped the slide by winning her match by 3 and 2 against Carol Whyte, that meant the score wass 4-4. In the last match to finish, Renfrewshire's Liz Stewart was one down to Wendy Nicholson but she pitched and putted to save par at the last. Nicholson's par putt to win the tie and give Midlothian overall victory just missed.
