Michael Stewart leads Scottish trio into last eight

Michael Stewart, Paul Shields and Jordan Findlay will line up in the quarter-finals of the South African Amateur Championship at Vaal de Grace today.

Scottish champion Stewart beat Fraserburgh's No 2 seed Kris Nicol 2 and 1 in the last 32 yesterday before continuing his title charge with a one-hole win over Kyle Basson in the afternoon.

Kirkhill teenager Shields, twice a runner-up in the Scottish Boys' Championship, saw off countryman Scott Gibson by 2 and 1 in round two.

He then booked a last-eight spot with a 19th hole victory over the fourth seed, Haydn Porteous.

Findlay, the former British Boys' champion and runner-up to Stewart in last year's Scottish Championship, underlined his matchplay credentials with a 3 and 2 defeat of Andre Huysamen before romping to a 5 and 4 win over Kevin Sharp.

David Law, runner-up in the South African Strokeplay event last month, went down by one hole to Riekus Nortje in round two while Ross Kellett made a third round exit after a one hole loss to Stephen Pienaar. Greg Paterson also departed in the last 16 after a 5 and 4 defeat to CJ Du Plessis.
