Menzieshill take step up

MENZIESHILL secured promotion to the elite Championship level despite losing their final game of the Indoor Club Champions Trophy in Vienna.

The Scots went down 5-3 to Kolos-Sekvoya Vinnitsa from the Ukraine to finish in silver medal position. In the previous game East Grinstead had thrashed the host club Akademischer HTC Wien 5-0, meaning that as long as Menzieshill did not lose by more than five goals they would step up to the top division.

The Taysiders trailed 2-1 at half-time with Chris Wilson continuing his impressive goal-scoring form, but forced an equaliser through Andrew Thornton from a corner routine. Seconds later they found themselves behind again only to reply immediately through Kris Holmes.

A tense final 15 minutes saw Kolos score two further goals but Menzieshill saw the game out without further damage.

Captain Kerr Thomson had earlier led from the front when he lashed home an overtime penalty to gain Menzieshill the invaluable point against Akademischer HTC Wien in the first crossover game.

Back on home soil, Milne Craig Western moved to the top of the women's Subway National League thanks to a 3-2 victory over CALA Edinburgh.

Dundee Wanderers beat Giffnock 5-0, Hillhead and GHK drew 0-0 and Edinburgh University beat InveRoss 3-1.
