Melbourne beckons as Manighar bids for Goodwood Cup glory

MANIGHAR can book his ticket to the Melbourne Cup by claiming top honours in the Artemis Goodwood Cup.

Luca Cumani's grey enjoyed a fairly successful trip to Flemington last season and he showed when last seen in the Ascot Gold Cup that he is a top performer on his day.

He has not won since being switched to the Italian from Alain de Royer-Dupre, but he has run some big races in defeat.

After his seventh place finish in the Melbourne Cup last year, he stayed out there for one more run and came third in the Sandown Classic.

On his first start back in England he went close to winning the Yorkshire Cup when beaten a length into third by Duncan and maybe just found his stamina running out in the big one at Ascot.

His chances would be improved by a shower or two, but with no outstanding stayer in the line-up in the absence of Fame And Glory, Manighar would just have to run to his level to win.

The Audi King George Stakes is made up of unpredictable but classy types such as Kingsgate Native or improving handicappers like Captain Dunne. However, backing sprinters in form is usually beneficial and Noble Storm arrives in Sussex in great heart.

Sir Henry Cecil's Wild Coco looks on the upgrade ahead of the I-Shares Fillies' Stakes, or the Lillie Langtry as it used to be known. Having won one of her two starts, she was backed as if defeat was out of the question in the Aphrodite Stakes at Newmarket, but was made to work hard by Meeznah.

Wild Coco is better off on these terms, however, so it is hard to see last year's Oaks runner-up turning the tables.

Very impressive at Salisbury in May, he was too keen for his own good when third in a competitive handicap that has worked out well at Epsom.

Richard Fahey's Goldenveil returns to action in the same mark on which he finished fourth behind Barbican at Doncaster in April.

That race has thrown up plenty of winners, and Paul Hanagan has chosen her in preference to a stablemate.

Prince Siegfried can return to winning ways in Epsom's Try totequickpick If You're Feeling Lucky Conditions Stakes for Saeed bin Suroor and he can double up at Nottingham with Terdaad in the Complete Data Security From Imperva Handicap.
