McFarlane: I will not let Leith be lax

Leith ATHLETIC, the leaders of the Central Taxis First Division, journey south to meet Peebles Rovers at Whitestone Park with manager Willie McFarlane in buoyant mood.

Leith are currently seven points clear of their nearest challengers although the chasing pack, including Easthouses Lily and Gretna 2008, do have games in hand over them.

"We are delighted the way the season has gone so far but we are only half way there," stressed McFarlane. "Tomorrow will be like starting the season all over again although this time we are taking a seven-point advantage into the second half of the league campaign.

"We are certainly not taking anything for granted because you just need a couple of results to go against you and suddenly the situation changes."

Leith beat Peebles 6-0 on the opening day of the season but, again, McFarlane is not reading too much into that particular result. "We played really well that day, scored early goals and kept a clean sheet," he said. "However, the Peebles line-ups have changed a lot since then and their manager, Stuart Robertson, has had some good results to take them into mid-table. We have a squad of 18 available."

Darren Lavery is rated as doubtful although Dougie Thom and Steven Lynch are both available.

The Rovers manager, Stuart Robertson, is hopeful that, despite a light fall of snow on Thursday morning, the game will go ahead. "We trained off the park this week and it was very muddy so we will just have to wait and see although the forecast is not very good," said Robertson, who took over the job only one week before the opening fixture of the season.

"Tomorrow will be a very difficult game because Leith are the best team in the league and their results speak for themselves. They are strong and ambitious and our main aim is to give a good account of ourselves."

Robertson has been well served by his coach and leading goalscorer, Kevin Martin, along with Keith Harper, Craig Edgar, Alan Chalmers and Fraser Henderson who have all made major contributions.

The game kicks off at 2.00 pm at Whitestone Park.
