Martin Dempster: Good to hear Sam’s dulcet tones in commentary box again

IT is interesting to note that the sound of Sam Torrance’s dulcet tones commentating on a golf tournament again has sparked some frenzied speculation on internet sites.

The former Ryder Cup captain was in the box alongside Ewen Murray during the Nedbank Challenge in South Africa and has led to speculation that he has joined the Sky Sports golf team.

In fact, Torrance and Murray were working for South African broadcaster SuperSport at the Sun City event, where the equally excellent Andrew Coltart was also part of the team.

Torrance was deemed “surplus to requirements” by the BBC at The Masters this year and wasn’t involved at The Open either, though the latter was his decision.

It was great to hear him again last week and, with some re-shuffling to do in the wake of Di Dougherty departing last weekend – she is leaving broadcasting altogether to spend more time with her family and pursue other interests, we are told – there are many people out there who would applaud seeing Torrance team up with the likes of Murray and David Livingstone on Sky Sports in the future.
