Marius Zaliukas told Hearts will not be held to ransom

Hearts director Sergejus Fedotovas has warned captain Marius Zaliukas that the club won't be held to ransom after the Lithuanian internationalist demanded an extravagant wage rise.

Zaliukas - whose loan deal from FBK Kaunas in his homeland expires at the end of December - could have played his last game for Jim Jefferies' side just weeks after being handed the armband.

As the 26-year-old prepares for the visit of Scotland in tomorrow's opening Euro 2012 qualifier, face-to-face talks between Zaliukas and Hearts owner Vladimir Romanov have broken down after club sources said the player is holding out for 'English Premier League wages'. Hearts officials even suspect Zaliukas, who has been on loan since summer 2006 and has clocked up 115 appearances, has deliberately priced himself out of a permanent switch to Gorgie as he no longer wants to play for the club.

Fedotovas has been part of the negotiations and is adamant Hearts won't bow to the player's excessive demands.

He said: "Like every club, we are trying to look after our finances and we won't make exceptions for players when it comes to things like this. You have to implement a strict financial policy.

"Hearts is an attractive club. Players want to come to Edinburgh to play for Hearts but some people think they can achieve much, much more, which I doubt.

"Some players don't like to stay here, they believe they can find a better place out there and I don't think this is the right thinking for this situation.

"We have seen a number of players depart the club under the same idea but we don't hear about them any more. Then you have players like Craig Gordon and Christophe Berra who did it the proper way."

Romanov has notoriously adopted a hardline approach over players that have rejected contracts in the past, as both Andy Webster and Jose Goncalves can testify.

Both players were frozen out of the first team when they knocked back fresh terms and Zaliukas is unlikely to be treated any differently.

Fedotovas does not hold out much hope of both parties striking an agreement.

He added: "It's too early to say whether a deal can be reached. We have had discussions with him.

"It does not make sense what is happening with this situation, maybe he is listening to people outside the club."

Meanwhile, former Hearts midfielder Laryea Kingston has joined Dutch top-flight side Vitesse Arnhem after being axed by the Edinburgh club at the end of last season.

The Ghanaian internationalist trained with his new team-mates yesterday morning for the first time and is looking forward to kick-starting his career in Holland.

Kingston said: "I have not played for three months and it's nice that I can train again. The training was tough but I like that. For the fans that don't know much about me, I'm pretty versatile. I can play both at the back and midfield.I have 41 caps for Ghana and have scored eight times. I have twice played in the African Nations Cup."
