Maltman makes it clear where his ambitions lie

RISING rugby star Mike Maltman today revealed he is setting sights on a professional contract in English rugby with the glitzy premiership an obvious attraction.

Scotland under-20 cap Maltman played his final match for Heriot's at flanker in Thursday's 17-19 defeat by Currie and will now focus attention on trying to secure a deal south of the border. "I am looking to move to England next season and I have an agent who is trying to set something up," said Maltman, who has been named in Scotland's squad for next month's world under-20 championships in Argentina.

Maltman, originally from Musselburgh, had been undertaking studies while part of Scotland's academy set up, but now says: "For a while I wanted to try and combine my studies with rugby but now it's all about rugby and I can pick up the books again later."

In taking his leave Maltman has effectively closed the door on any step up to the ranks of the Scottish professional teams where his home city outfit currently run with six back rowers – Roddy Grant, Ross Rennie, Fraser McKenzie, Scott Newlands, Ally Hogg and Dave Callam, although the last two named have still to re-sign amidst uncertainties surrounding their future.

It is clear, though, where the 6ft 1in and 16st Maltman's heart lies. "All my options are open but I would like to measure myself in England. It would be good to get a decent salary as well."

After Heriot's final game of the season coach Bob McKillop highlighted the contributions of the rangy ball-carrier that is Maltman, who, having scored the opening try was still surging into the Ayr ranks right up until the final whistle.

Maltman added: "I've had a great time at Heriot's and will be sorry to leave the club behind. But I'm sure the club will be back up at the top of the table soon with all the talent that is around Goldenacre."
