Maiden and Lockhart earn recall for Saltires

THE Scotland selectors have recalled Gregor Maiden and Dougie Lockhart to the Saltires squad for the Clydesdale Bank 40 fixtures against Hampshire at The Rose Bowl on Sunday and Kent at Canterbury on Monday.

Ryan Watson is unavailable for the trip due to business commitments, while the selectors have decided to rest Marc Petrie. Matthew Parker is being allowed to play club cricket this weekend in order to gain some match time after being 12th man in the first three games.

Maiden, the Grange all-rounder, returns to the national squad for the first time since 2008. The 86-times capped player has been in superb form for Grange in the national league and will give captain Gavin Hamilton an extra bowling option in the absence of Ryan Watson.

Lockhart, the fifth most-capped player in Scotland's history with 157 caps, returns to the one-day side as the wicket-keeper/batsman. He is rewarded for an excellent start to his season, including a hundred against Carlton in the SNCL last weekend.

Commenting on the squad, head coach Peter Steindl said: "We have made some good progress in the first three games of the season and will look to improve in certain areas again this weekend. Losing Ryan is a blow as he was timing the ball very nicely last week, but it gives an opportunity to Gregor Maiden to show he can perform at this level again.

"Marc Petrie is progressing well in his development, but at this time we feel he would benefit from a few more games with his club side and the National Academy.

"The selectors feel we need to strengthen our batting line up, and Dougie has been in fine form recently. So he has the opportunity to re-establish a place in the one-day side."

This weekend's two games complete the Saltires fixtures in the first half of the season, with the remaining seven games being played in late July and August.

Saltires squad: Gavin Hamilton (captain), Omer Hussain, George Bailey, Freddie Coleman, Richie Berrington, Gregor Maiden, Neil McCallum, Dougie Lockhart (w/k), Gordon Drummond, Majid Haq, Ross Lyons, Gordon Goudie and Neil Laidlaw.
