Magnificent Hannah Miley strikes gold four times in 90 minutes

WITHIN the space of 90 minutes, Hannah Miley confirmed her standing as Scotland's outstanding swimmer by collecting four gold medals on the opening day of the Scottish Gas National short-course Championships at Tollcross Leisure Centre in Glasgow.

The run started with a time of 8:28.54 in the punishing 800 metres and ended with a fine 2:12.99 in the 200m butterfly. In between she added the 100m breaststroke (1:10.24) and was an easy winner over the distance in which she took bronze at last month's European short-course Championships in Turkey, the 200m individual medley (2:13.76).

Last month, she was also involved in the Duel in the Pool between Europe and the US in Manchester and, since then, she has stepped up her training in a bid to become stronger.

"I'm so small compared to other swimmers and it really showed up against the Americans," said the 5ft 5ins Miley, who is coached by her father, Patrick, at the Garioch Club in Inverurie.

"At 20, I feel I'm becoming quite old as a swimmer and so it's nice to still be able to pack in a lot of events in one meet. I was most pleased with the 100m breaststroke time. I was within one second off my personal best coming straight off the 800m freestyle." In one of the closest races of an evening interrupted by a fire alarm – the pool had to be evacuated for 20 minutes – Lewis Smith, who made a significant breakthrough last year by competing for Team GB at the world championships, just came off second best in a fingertip touch to Warrender club-mate, Craig McNally.

Olympic 200m freestyle finalist Robbie Renwick (City of Glasgow) won the 50m freestyle while, at the other end of the experience scale, a couple of teenagers claimed national junior records.

Warrender 14-year-old Fiona Donnelly showed her promise by winning the 50m breaststroke in a new Scottish junior record of 28.92, just holding off last year's winner, 17-year-old Sarah Eaglesham (City of Chester).

Warrender's 15-year-old Craig Benson also claimed a record with a time of 29.45 in taking seventh place in the 50m breaststroke, which meant he was also crowned Scottish Junior Champion.
